Cynthia Han will give a preliminary introduction to her PhD project “The ties that bind: the Chinese American family in transnational Chinese cinema”, with a focus on two major research questions:

1) Why are films in relation to Chinese Americans often characterized by family narrative in transnational Chinese cinema?

2) How does transnational Chinese cinema define and negotiate the aesthetic conventions of melodrama that is commonly used to depict Chinese American families?
